Which Came First: Santa or the Christmas Tree?

You think Santa Claus and decorated trees when you think Christmas, right? The Jolly One probably comes first as the number one symbol of the holiday, but there’s no mistaking that Christmas trees are nearly just as important when it comes to celebrating the holiday right.
Santa Claus and Christmas trees are so intertwined, so connected, in how we celebrate, it makes one think that Santa maybe even invented the Christmas tree. After all, it’s Santa who places everyone’s presents underneath the tree. Maybe back in the old days, before trees, he used to place presents under children’s beds and in the bathtub. And maybe eventually he got tired of it, and instead invented Christmas trees as a convenient and fun place for him to leave presents. Makes sense, right?
Maybe, but Santa had little to do with the real reason that Christmas trees came about. Sorry to disappoint you folks, but it was actually German Christians who started the Christmas tree celebration, way back in the 1500s. And as for decorating these trees, the story goes that one of the top Christians of them all, Martin Luther, started decorating his family’s tree in the 1500s with lit candles. He got the idea one night walking home under the stars.
Then the idea really caught on in the mid-1800s, when the Queen of England and her children started decorating a tree for Christmas. Sketches of the royal family with their decorations got put in all the major newspapers, and soon every good Englishman was starting a new family tradition: decorating their house and home with colorful decorations and freshly smelling, beautifully green evergreen trees.
In America, however, we were a little bit slow, not just with decorating Christmas trees but with celebrating Santa Claus and anything else ‘extra’ in their Christmas festivities. That’s because up until the very end of the 1800s, Americans saw Christmas as a very religious holiday. There was no room for chubby men in red suits, or bright decorations and candles, and even a Christmas tree. All Americans did back then was go to church service. Period.
But then the Queen of England enjoyed her Christmas tree. And many immigrants to the United States, especially the German ones, celebrated December 25 with trees, lights, and holiday cheer. Eventually, the fun caught on. In true American fashion, though, Americans not only took on the tradition of Christmas trees and decorations, they improved on it. Every thing had to be bigger, better, and more festive!
For example, at the turn of the 20th century, Europeans tended to like their trees manageable, at only about the height of your typical sixth grader. But when Americans started catching on to the tree tradition, they decided they liked their trees big, so big that they touched the ceiling of their homes.
Then Americans took it one step further with the invention of electricity in homes. Trees were braided with strings of multicolored lights. Homes were covered with decorations of every color, blinking lights, and Santa Claus statues with his sleigh of reindeer. Even towns and cities started setting up Santa Claus displays around Town Hall, as well as Christmas trees that reached to the sky.

The Many Faces of Santa

Santa Claus actually started out as a version of Poseidon,
Greek god of the sea, known as Neptune by the Romans. Early
Greek sailors feared him. He could bring terrible storms in
the sea, or grant them safe journeys. Because he could save
them from the angry waters, he because known as giver of
all good things . The Romans and Greeks held a festival on
December 6 in his honor.
Many countries still celebrate Christmas on December 6 but
due to the rise of Christianity, the day was changed to St.
Nicholas Day in honor of an Asian bishop. Nicholas of Myra
was a benevolent bishop who wore red clothing, rode a white
horse who could fly, and delivered gifts anonymously.
In America, we celebrate with Santa and his flying reindeer.
But many countries still celebrate with their own unique
version of Santa.
In Sicily, it is the spirits of departed loved ones who
bring gifts to children.
Italian children wait for a kindly old witch named Befana
who flies through the air on a broom.
A Russian counterpart is known as Baboushka. Also called
Grandfather Frost in some parts of the country.
In Holland Sintirk lass arrives by boat on December 6th.
Children leave a wooden shoe filled with hay and carrots for
the donkey, which carries the pack of toys.
In Sweden a gnome called Juletomten brings gifts in a
sleigh driven by goats.
In Germany and Switzerland the Christ kindl , or Christ
Child, brings the gifts. In some towns, Christ kindl is an
angel who comes down from heaven to give gifts.
In Australia Santa rides water skis, has a white beard, and
red bathing suit.
In China, Christmas Old Man, brings gifts to children.
In England, Father Christmas wears a longer coat and has a
longer beard.
In France he’s known as Pere Noel.
All of Latin America and Spain are predominantly Catholic so
Baby Jesus, el Niño Jesus, brings the gifts.
In Puerto Rico, children receive gifts from the Three Kings
on January 6th, also called Epiphany. Every child puts
grass under their bed for the camels. In the morning the
grass is replaced with gifts. But since Puerto Rico is part
of the United States, major gift giving is done on December
25 from Santa Claus.
In Morocco he is known as Black Peter.
In Japan, Santa Claus is called just Santa and many
children still call him Santa no ojisan, which means
Uncle Santa.
No matter what name a child calls Santa, it’s a thrill to
write to, and get an answer from the North Pole.

When it comes to the biggest characters of the Christmas season, you might initially think of all of your television favourites. After all, what Christmas would be complete without at least the possibility of sitting down in front of the TV – post-lunch – and enjoying a repeat of ET, James Bond, Indiana Jones or – shock horror – perhaps even Mary Poppins? There’s Rambo too, but not until after the kids have gone to bed. Or perhaps the Queen comes to mind when one thinks of the most important faces of Christmas. After all, who hasn’t tuned into to Her Majesty’s afternoon slot, and – filled with a sense of pride – listened to what the Queen considers to be the most important highlights of the year that is now drawing to a close? There really are few Christmas Gifts more magical than that.
But, Christmas would not be complete without a few more heavy-hitters; the real A-List celebrities of the festive season. And the Big Daddy of them all is little Baby Jesus. Also known as Jesus of Nazareth and Jesus Christ, Baby Jesus is a central figure of Christianity and a prophet of Islam.
Those familiar with the nativity story will know that Baby Jesus was born in the city of Bethlehem and his mother was the Virgin Mary. Born in a manger because of a severe shortage of accommodation – presumably because it was hard to book in advance at this point in history – after his birth Baby Jesus was visited by the Three Wise Men, who are also known as the Three Kings or the Kings from the East. And it was from these men that he received the three Gifts of myrrh, gold and frankincense. Even today, Baby Jesus is associated with gift giving at Christmas time and with gift giving in the Czech Republic taking place on Christmas Eve, it is the duty of baby Jesus to make sure the Christmas Gifts are under the tree.
Santa is another one of the heavyweights of the season of goodwill. Although also known as Father Christmas, the two names actually relate to different traditions. But don’t break the news to the kids quite yet. Depicted as a jolly but portly individual, Santa is mostly seen sporting a red outfit, trimmed with white – not forgetting the black leather boots – and is known across the world as the giver of Christmas Gifts. The history of Santa can be found in American culture, but he also has his origins in early Christian times, as well as Dutch folklore and even pre-Christian periods. Father Christmas on the other hand was originally the personification of the Christmas season and was not initially associated with the giving of Gifts. All that has certainly changed now…
Next in line is Rudolf. Also known by his full title Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, this friendly character is a member of Santa’s sleigh-pulling entourage and an essential component of the jolly man’s Christmas Gifts-giving process. Known for sporting a red nose, Rudolf works with a team of eight other reindeer who all possess the ability to fly (unless of course you come from Finland, where they don’t). Needless to say, this cute Christmas character is entirely fictional, which could prove to be a crushing blow to children below a certain age; but then they’ll have to be told the truth at some point.
Frosty the Snowman is another famous character from Christmases past and present. Often featured on cards and the wrapping paper on Christmas Gifts, the well-known song that we all associate with this cute little snowman was created by Steve Nelson and Walter Rollins. And their little gift to music came hot on the heels of that other well-known Christmas favourite, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Frosty has also appeared on an animated short film and there was even a Frosty the Snowman television special, which was produced in 1969.
And for those who long to sing the song of Frosty, it tells a tale of a happy snowman, made from a corncob, a button and coal. Frosty was a man who, while made of snow, was able to dance and play with children. But ultimately he knew his fate and that his destiny was to be melted by the snow. However, before he left, he declared that one day he would return. Not much chance of that this year though, without a decent amount of snow.

How to be the Next Santa Claus

Let’s face it: Santa’s getting up there. Though no official statement from his publicist has been released, we are all expecting that Mr. Claus will be retiring soon. I think hundreds of years as a civil servant are more than enough to start collecting a pension. All of the elves have roughly equal seniority, so hiring within the company would create workplace tensions and could lead to a strike or, even worse, a coup d’état. And no one likes a militant elf; they’re so confrontational. To avoid a public relations nightmare, the people at Claus Corp. have decided in favor of outsourcing and invite all willing participants to apply. Before you start ho, ho, hoing, there are some prerequisites you must satisfy.
1. You must love children. Now, we don’t mean like them a little, or have logged a few hours babysitting. You are to become the hero to every single boy and girl in the world (and a few developmentally halted adults). It is imperative you treat these billions of kids as if they were your own grandchildren. Eat their cookies, regardless of their taste and shape. Drink their milk even if their little fingers dipped in. Respond to their letters in a loving, compassionate way, even if you know there’s no chance they’ll receive everything on their lists.
2. You must have the right look. Our HR department will remind us time and again that we can’t ask you to gain weight, grow a beard, and wear nothing but red velvet the rest of your career. However, the current Santa Claus has done an excellent job of portraying a figure who we all recognize, from his wire-rimmed glasses to his soot-stained boots. You are encouraged to take over this position and make it your own . . . but don’t stray too far from the original recognizable figure. For example, we frown upon wearing green, but encourage you to stuff a pillow in your fur-lined coat.
3. You must know how to operate a sleigh. This is, hands down the most significant aspect of the job. Owning and operating a sleigh is a privilege, not a right, so safety and caution are of the utmost importance. Being that those of us who don’t live in the North Pole are not readily familiar with such machinery, we encourage you to purchase a sleigh bed for practice. These beds are of a perfect shape and are made of the finest wood. Meticulous detailing on either side adds a creative touch for those who like to think outside the box. As well, sleigh beds are truly comfortable and safe and provide an excellent environment for hours and hours of sleigh-steering practice. Claus Corp will provide you with reindeer.
