No longer thought of as just part of an affectionate good-night saying to your children, bed bugs have become something of a real-life nightmare for everyone. In recent news in New York City, a wide-scale epidemic of bedbugs has broken out throughout the city and even posh areas such as the upper East Side have had major bed bug problems.
Experts believe that the cause for the rise in bed bugs are due to an increase in global travel and mobility, the banning of DDT along with reduced use of urban pesticides. Until recently, bedbugs were thought to have been put to rest since World War II.
While most bed bug situations that have arisen in Texas have not been as large-scale as New York City, there is still a huge and looming concern that bed bug incidents could multiply. Known commonly in Texas as “chinches,” these bugs usually inhabit bedding and can also make their homes in luggage, furniture, clothing, and clutter on the floor.
The adult bed bug has a dark brown, wingless body with a crinkle shape on its “shell.” However, once the bed bug has fed on human blood, its body becomes elongated and swollen, and changes from brown to a dull red. Its size depends on the amount of blood that the bed bug consumes. An unfed bed bug is between one-fourth and three-eighths of an inch long.
Treating Bed bugs
Getting rid of bed bugs can be tricky. New York Daily News provides the following Dos and Don’ts for dealing with bed bugs:
DOs
- Store all your accessible food in rodent-proof containers such as glass or metal
- Identify a reputable pest control company. It should be licensed, insured and state-certified.
- Bag up all clothing in plastic garbage bags, which must be sealed airtight.
- Dry-clean garments. Chemicals in dry-cleaning can kill bedbugs; washers and dryers will kill them only at temperatures above 140 degrees Farenheit.
- Bag books, papers, pictures, most loose objects and contents of closets to exterminators have access to all cracks and crevices in the home.
- Expect exterminators to apply restricted-use, federally approved pesticides and return for follow-up treatment
DON’Ts
- Don’t panic: bed bugs don’t carry or transmit diseases.
- Don’t spray your home or apartment: It can spread or scatter the pests.
- Don’t throw out mattresses or furniture unwrapped: They can fall off and infest other parts of the building.
- Don’t put kerosene, gasoline, or chemicals on mattresses: It’s a fire hazard and is ineffective.
- Don’t reuse bags after vacuuming affected areas.
- Don’t permit asthmatics, pregnant women, seniors or small children to stay in apartments or homes that are being sprayed with pesticides.
However, the best thing to do if you suspect a bed bug problem in your home is to get in touch with a pest control expert who has experience in handling and treating bed bug infestations. Pest control operators will be able to diagnose the problem and take the appropriate measures to treat your bed bug infestation.

For millions of people worldwide, visiting a tanning solarium is a recurring and expensive task. Furthermore, the entire time that it takes to travel to and from a tanning salon, then getting unclothed and then redressed, can easily slice into your day. This makes a trip to a tanning solarium an exercise that really needs to be planned way ahead of time. And in a lot of cases, a tanning salon will never have any availability when you want it, because most people will want to visit at the most desirable times of the day, like lunch time on work days.
For these reasons, people are seeking alternatives to tanning salons. People just want easiness – they don’t want to be scheduling their whole week around a few trips to the tanning salon. Those that want a consistent tan are now starting to catch on that if there was a tanning alternative that could be performed at home, they would have far more spare time in their schedules.
Saving time isn’t the only reason for seeking alternatives to tanning salons, cost is important too. A visit to a tanning salon is usually in the $15-$30 range. If you start to compute the cost of each tanning salon session, and then factor in the preparation time to get there, to undress, experience your tanning session, then redress and get back home or to work, there is definitely a lot of wasted time and effort. And as the old saying goes, ‘time is money’.
The privacy factor of home tanning beds is just one more major reason that many people are opting to buy their own. For best tanning results it is quite obvious that you will need to be either naked, or nearly naked. Most people will avoid derobing at a tanning solarium because of our genetic tendency for personal privacy. Buying your own tanning bed can be very costly. You will certainly need to establish that buying a tanning bed is for long term use, and not just another fad.
The home tanning bed is a lot lower in price than the commercial tanning bed because it is constructed in a more economical manner. The common at-home tanning bed would be used once a day, maybe twice a day, whereas in a salon the average bed may be used more than 20 times per day. It’s like comparing a budget iron with a professional steam iron. We all know which one costs less, and we all know which one is suited to 8-10 hours usage a day.
A home tanning bed will naturally be less susceptive to the rigors of a commercial tanning bed, but they are certainly capable of providing a golden tan – completely the same as you would get from a tanning solarium. Commercial tanning beds use a very high-tech lamp system, and so do most domestic ones, meaning that the tanning results will be much the same.
But commercial tanning beds are far more long-lasting and efficient. Like we said above, the typical bed in a tanning solarium could be used more than 20 times per day, so the formation of commercial tanning beds needs to be consistent with such high usage. Furthermore, a commercial bed will most often have far more lamps in it than a domestic tanning bed. A domestic tanning bed will normally have 16 lamps versus around 40 lamps for a commercial bed. The obvious result is that the domestic bed takes longer to achieve the same result.
