The Evolution of Futon Convertible Sofa Beds

There are many styles of convertible sofa beds available on the market today. They have greatly evolved from the early click-clack beds to pull out hide-a-beds to the Japanese futon and back again to the beginning. All of these styles can still be found, greatly improved upon their early predecessors, being more comfortable and stylish than ever before. But today, lets take a look at the history and evolution of the futon and the revolutionary new styles available.
As you probably know, the traditional futon is from Japan. The original futon was not designed to be folded up into a sofa, but was designed to be folded and put away so that the room could be used for other purposes. The futon was more of a bedding set that had two main parts: the bottom mattress (shikibuton) and the thick quilted bedcover (kakebuton). The mattress is only about 2.0 inches thick and is filled with a cotton or synthetic batting. This makes them easy to fold away and store in a closet. The Japanese futon needs to be regularly aired out in the sun and are often beaten using a special bamboo tool similar to a carpet beater.
I am not sure when the futon was introduced in the US, but I remember first seeing them in the 1980’s. However, the western futon has some major differences from the original. The primary difference is that they are put on a wood or metal frame that folds in the middle, allowing them to be used as convertible sofa beds. During the day they can be folded up in the sofa position, and then they can be flattened out at night to be used as a bed. Almost all of these that I have seen have wooden arm rests.
The next major difference is the mattress. First, it is thicker. A high end futon will have a mattress that is up to six to eight inches thick. A cheap, discount store futon’s mattress is usually only about 4″ thick. Though this is still twice the thickness of the traditional Japanese futon, it is often needed because of the metal frame it rests on. Besides being thicker, the mattresses often have a removable cover for easy washing or replacing. The cheaper mattresses are made of foam and batting. The thick mattresses have multiple layers of foam and batting. Some of the higher quality futon mattresses actually have coils like a real mattress.
The latest evolution in the western futon I had never seen before until today. This type of convertible sofa beds are called a futon, but looks just like a regular sofa. The ones I saw were made by Handy Living and had a really nice microfiber upholstery with full padded arms and throw pillows. You can get them in a full sofa size or the smaller love seat, and in a whole variety of colors to suit any decor. Besides looking like a regular sofa, these convertible sofa beds not only fold flat for sleeping, but also can be partially reclined. They also claim that they easily convert from one position to another, using just a touch of a hand. This sure beats the wood or metal framed futon! We have a fairly nice one, and though laying it flat is not a problem, it is a two person job to get it upright again. One last improvement worth mentioning is that the back and seating area is 10″ thick with coils, so very comfortable – especially since there is no bar in the middle of your back as in the cheap futons!

Convertible sofa beds are one of the numerous smart furniture that is available in the market today. Early sofa beds were huge, hideous and very unattractive. However, they surely used to serve their purpose of providing dual use of a couch in the day and a bed by night.
Lately, there has been a great improvement in such beds. They are not only stylish but are also equally comfortable. The best thing about owning one of the convertible sofa beds is their obvious utility. They are also called hide-a-beds because the bed hides away inside what appears to be a normal looking couch. If living space is limited, and the need exists for another bed for a guest to sleep on, then this makes a nice alternative to setting up a separate bed when it is only going to be used occasionally.
People who live in small in a small apartment with an even smaller bedroom now can rejoice since they only need to shop around for sofa beds that suit their style. Without compromising much space, you can have the luxury of both a couch and a bed together.
The most common style among sofa beds is the pull out bed style. It looks like a normal couch, but then you remove the cushions and there is a bed that can be pulled out from the bottom of the sofa.
Modern sofa beds are now available in click clack style. They are named this way due to the sound that they make when they are converted from sofa to bed: click-clack-click-clack. There is a special type of hinging mechanism that allows the back of the sofa to lie flat. These types are really innovative as compared to their earlier counterparts. After they are converted into a bed, will have one side (not the back) that hinges up to a 45 degree angle to make more of a lounge style chair, or that props a person up to more easily watch TV or read. As compared to the pull out bed, they take up less room to convert from sofa to bed.
Lastly, there are futon sofa beds that have their inspiration from Japan. They convert the same way as a click clack bed, but typically have an all wood, or wood and metal frame. A “mattress” sits on the frame and bends in the middle when it is set up as a sofa. When you lay the frame flat, you have a bed with a regular, one piece mattress.

Convertible Sofa Beds – Three Different Styles

When I first think of convertible sofa beds, I think hide-a-beds, really heavy, and those brown patterned sofa beds from the 1980’s – not attractive but still out there in student apartments. A sofa bed serves a great purpose, a couch by day and an extra bed at night for guests when you do not have extra room. So you want comfort and function, not always easy to accomplish. But the industry is always trying, so there are several options on the market of different types of convertible sofa beds.

Since I grew up during the 1970’s and 1980’s, the first type I think of is like the one I mentioned above: a pull out sofa bed. It looks like a normal couch, but then you remove the cushions and there is a bed that can be pulled out from the bottom of the sofa. The mattress on these is not as thick as a regular mattress, they usually range from 4″ to 6″, and they vary in comfort. They are always more comfortable if they are newer, and more expensive ones tend to have better quality mattresses. I have slept on this type of convertible sofa bed with various results. Some I could hardly move in the morning, and other I woke up feeling like a spring chicken. One really nice thing about this style is that if you use it regularly, you can leave it made up with sheets and blankets. This style most commonly comes in either a full or queen size bed, though you can also get a love seat that has a twin bed inside. You can also get these as part of a sectional.

When we owned a used furniture store, I came across another style of convertible sofa bed that I had completely forgotten about, the click clack style. I am pretty sure that the name comes from the sound that they make when they are converted from sofa to bed: click-clack-click-clack … In this style there is a special type of hinging mechanism that allows the back of the sofa to lie flat. The early style of these have been around for about 60 years, but there are modern versions that are quite innovative. One advantage to these over the pull out bed is that they take up less room to convert from sofa to bed. One challenge for manufacturers is to make the bed feel flat, no bump in the middle where the bottom and back of the sofa meet.

When you lay the frame flat, you have a bed with a regular, one piece mattress. Futons sometimes get a bad rap for not being comfortable, but only if you get the $100 special from a discount store. Those just don’t last long, they have wimpy frames and only a 4″ mattress. A really good quality futon will have about an 8″ mattress, often with coils like a real mattress. These are quite comfortable for sleeping.

Convertible Sofa Beds Are Cool

Okay, everyone knows that convertible sofa beds can be really great for when company comes over and you don’t have an extra bed. Or, that they are perfect for when you want to the have use of a sofa with the option of turning it into a bed when needed. However, if you have ever moved one of these bad boys you know how incredibly heavy they can be. I used to deliver furniture for a living, and I can tell you from first hand experience, they can be ridiculously heavy. But in spite of their weight, for many people, the pros still outweigh the cons. I thought it would be interesting to let you in on what I have learned about convertible sofa beds that make them a pretty cool piece of furniture. Much to my pleasant surprise, it turns out that not all convertible sofa beds are super heavy and awkward to set up or to move. In fact, some of them are actually pretty reasonable. Take, for example, the modern click clack design. This is sort of a next gen futon type sofa bed that has a unique mechanism for converting the sofa into a bed. Because of the design itself, the weight is considerably less than a traditional hide-a-bed. So, with this design you get all the cool features and conveniences, without the main downside of being so heavy that only a he-man can move the thing. Another coolness factor about these convertible sofa beds is how some are designed to adjust into one of three different positions. So, whether you want to sit, recline, or lie down, this style is both comfortable and sturdy. The mattress and couch cushions are essentially the same since they are designed as an integral unit. This alleviates the mess and mystery of where to throw the cushions when setting up the bed in the traditional style. And one of the coolest things about these is that there is no steel bar in the middle of your back to keep you up all night. I like that many of these come standard with stain resistant micro fiber fabric: soft, durable, and long lasting. Another big plus to this type of sofa bed is that they are designed to fit through doorways of all sizes. Pretty cool! Next, I wanted to tell you something about convertible sofa beds that you may not know. You can get one that is sort of a mini version of the larger sized sofas or futons. For example, the Newport chair by Furniture FX is nicely designed with attractive wood legs, and beautiful fabrics. These are easily reclined and can be matched up with an available storage ottoman to make a single sized sleeper bed. Now, for under $400 bucks you can get a handsome piece of furniture that doubles as a chair and a small bed. How cool is that? Finally, there’s a company called Wholesale Interiors that makes convertible sofa beds that are just a bit different from other manufacturers. Theirs is a piece of furniture that has two chairs that sit next to each other on a steel frame, has a coffee table and a 360 degree swivel seat. These chairs can be transformed back into two separate beds, or even combined into one larger bed. True functionality and originality. Truly cool! Don’t hold back if you think you want one of the convertible sofa beds. They are varied and amazing. Plus, if you get one you’ll be cool. And, after all, who doesn’t want that?
