planning to buy a king platform bed – is suitable for an apartment?

I live in an apartment and my toddler crawls into our bed on weekends. I dont mind that, but it gets very uncomfortable on our queen size bed. I am planning to buy a king size bed for the other room (…though, there wont be much space left if i put in a king size bed) …
will a king platform bed take less space than the regular box spring metal/wood bed…will it atleast give an ‘illusion’ of taking up lesser space as it would be lower than the regular bed?
are platform beds cheaper than the regular ones – i am sure the final cost is less , as you dont have to buy a box spring ..!

I love the look of platform beds. I found a neat site with them; http://www.racksandstands.com. They have all sorts of styles, prices and list the dimensions. In answer though; it won’t take less room than the regular type; probably a little more due to the platform extensions, but it will look …”sleek”.

A kingsize bed in general is going to take up a lot of space and I’m not sure it’s even going to have the illusion that it takes less space since most platform beds have a headboard and footboard. HOWEVER….I still think this is a wise purchse. More than likely you will not always be in an apartment and this will be a sturdy and long lasting piece of furniture that you will able to take to another home with you! I think if you’re comfortable with sacrificing a little space in your room to make room for quality family time with your toddler on weekends, then this is a wise decision!
You can offset the limited space in the room by purchase flat storage bins to slide under your bed for sweaters and sweatshirts or out of season clothes to give you more room in your closets.

A king platform bed will cost at least $500, maybe more (I researched this before I got a king size Tempurpedic mattress). The mattress came with a box springs and frame. So, I went with the box springs and frame.
Keep in mind that the king size bed is a few inches longer than a queen, as well as wider. And, the platform takes up more room lengthwise for the head and foot boards. So, you have to take into account whether you’re going to have enough room to walk in front of the bed as well.
A California king is 84 inches long and 72 inches wide. Mark this out in the room where you’re going to put the bed. Add about 6 inches of length for the platform. Walk around the room as though the bed were there. Do you have enough room to get around? Do you have enough room for other furniture? Can you access dresser drawers, closets, and the door to the room itself? If so, get the bed and enjoy it. If not, reconsider getting such a large bed.

A king sized bed is the same length as a queen sized bed; the difference is it is about a foot and a half wider. The measurements for a queen are 60″ x 80″ whereas a king is 76″ x 80″. If you go with a platform bed, this may void the warranty on your mattress set, depending on what type of mattress you are going to be getting. Many memory foam mattresses (like a tempur-pedic) will allow you to put their bed on a platform bed instead of a box spring or a foundation without voiding the warranty.
As far as the look, it is going to lower the profile of your bed, which may make it look smaller than a king sized bed on a frame. It will take up slightly more space (2-3″ on each side) for the edges. However, it will definitely look smaller than a king sized headboard/footboard combination. You will probably end up spending about the same amount of money to buy the platform bed and a mattress as you would to buy the mattress, box springs and bed frame. Bed frames are between $60 and $100 depending on the quality of the frame. Not purchasing a box spring will save you about $250 on your mattress order. So, in the end you will probably end up spending about the same amount on both.
